Over 80% of marine pollution is caused by land-based activities. Entire marine ecosystems are undergoing fast change, from coral bleaching to sea level rise. Global warming is altering the ocean's chemistry and a variety of oceanic processes, endangering many kinds of marine creatures that are unable to adapt to higher temperatures. Overfishing is a major issue in a number of regions of the world. Conservationists argue for the establishment of large marine reserves to save the ocean's biodiversity. Plastics pose a significant and rising menace to the seas.
